This month, Joe discusses the evolution of the recruitment advertising agency.

"Thanks but I’m not interested in advertising."

That was the response I received during a recent first call with an employer after I told him that TMP is the world's largest independent recruitment advertising agency. At first I was slightly taken aback, doesn't he know that TMP is the Digital Brand Authority; that we understand today's jobseekers like no one else; that we swallow lightning and breathe out award-winning creative solutions? Doesn't he read the monthly edition of The Edge and value our thought leadership via our industry events, our macro and even micro blogs? I mean, yes, the word Advertising is in our agency classification but why does he think that we just specialize in advertising? How disparaging. Then in the 1.5 milliseconds it took me to synthesize all of those thoughts, I realized that he was 100% correct in responding the way that he did.

Many employers currently or in the past have worked with recruitment advertising agencies. (Note that I deliberately wrote "worked with" vs "partnered with." It's a common agency theme: we want to be considered partners but unfortunately, many agencies continue to operate as strictly vendors). Several years ago a client/agency relationship likely entailed your agency writing and submitting your print ads and job postings, developing creative campaigns, producing collateral, etc. A client/agency relationship was...

TalentBrew BITs (Branded Internet Templates) - Strategic Use of Landing Pages to Increase Your Conversion Rates

Are you leveraging the power of the Internet in all of your recruitment strategies? Attracting candidates with keywords, banner ads, print, etc., is only part of the battle. Don't place a targeted advertisement and send traffic to a general website. You will increase the risk of frustrating candidates and experience an unnecessary level of user drop-offs.

TMP Worldwide's TalentBrew BITs are position/content specific landing pages aimed at "completing" the candidate experience. Using the same look and feel of your corporate website or TalentBrew site, these web pages can be created and customized with very specific content and made available very quickly. You can drive candidates to these pages from anywhere and be assured that the targeted information is available. Candidates can opt-in to learn more about your organization and answer specific questions; allowing you to capture valuable data on each candidate.

Elizabeth Saury Serves As Panelist

Elizabeth SauryTMP Worldwide’s Elizabeth Saury, Director of Digital Strategy, served as a panelist for The Social Club of South Florida. This month’s event focused on how HR Professionals use Social Media, including challenges and best practices. Other panelists included local brands such as City Furniture and FIU, as well as the VP of a company that recruits in the QSR space. The conversation revolved around how these brands use social media to connect with individuals, recruit candidates, and even how a candidate’s online profile can hurt them in a job search. The session was followed by a QA session with attendees who wanted to know how to put their best foot forward in the social space when looking for a job. There were many surprised by the panelists’ candor regarding how the social profile one keeps may hurt their own “brand” but continued these conversations at a local watering hole. The Social Club of South Florida was established in 2008, and hopes to bring awareness of the social space to the local community.

Branding the Federal Government, Part One: What would you say at the Super Bowl?

Suppose you had 30 seconds to show the value of the U.S. government to the world’s largest television audience. What would your message be? In its February 2011 issue, Harper’s Magazine put this question to some advertising agency creative pros that had done advertising for such Super Bowl stalwarts as Doritos and Nike. While their responses tended towards the humorous...

Success Story
Challenge
TMP’s client, a Nationwide Staffing Organization, is a top 10 industry leader with a national network of over 400 offices, including specialized operational groups focused on their clients’ business. The organization had 14 various brands under an overarching corporate umbrella. The corporate umbrella is separated into two smaller umbrellas each with its own set of brands and very unique recruiting needs.

Solution
TMP developed an online recruitment advertising campaign for this Nationwide Staffing Organization, the goal of which was to attract the maximum number of applicants. The campaign was measured by TMP’s Campaign Management solution, which tracks the performance and efficiency of all interactive media placements from a candidate’s first impression, to their final “Click to Submit.”

The Organization receives analysis of trends, data segmented by type of media, data compared to known benchmarks as well as detailed visual metrics interpreted through charts and graphs. In addition, they receive monthly reports of campaign performance to help identify non-performers, then makes recommendations for possible reallocation of media in current or future campaigns.

Industry Update
Retail Industry Update

By: Michael Jellson, Sr. Account Director

After a rough few years, it seems like we are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. After finishing 2010 with 10 consecutive months of private sector employment gains, several reports are out that show the momentum should continue in 2011.

According to a recent Manpower study, the US shows the most promising hiring outlook in more than two years. Of the more than 18,000 employers surveyed, 14% anticipate an increase in staff levels in their Quarter 1 2011 hiring plans. Of the retailers surveyed, more than 10% are expecting an increase in hiring in the first quarter.

More good news in the retail sector comes from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) who recently released their 2011 Job Outlook Survey. With especially high increases in college hiring from retailers, retail organizations stand out as “best bets” for bachelor’s degree level candidates for the class of 2011.

All of this is excellent news considering the retail industry accounts for one in five American workers.
